KAWC is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as a non-commercial, educational radio station. KAWC's licensee is Arizona Western College. Within AWC, KAWC is part of the Office of the President and reports to Vice President of Information Technology Services, Paul Neuman.
Located on the campus of Arizona Western College and Northern Arizona University-Yuma, KAWC AM-1320 began broadcasting on July 11, 1970, and FM-88.9 was added in 1992. In early 2006, KAWC began broadcasting the FM signal over the Internet. Also taking place in early 2006, KAWC joined the Arizona Public Radio network through a management agreement with Northern Arizona University and KNAU in Flagstaff. KAWC is a member station of National Public Radio.
